MARINE CONSERVATIONThe largest habitat on earth
is in danger

Unexplored diversity

It is widely believed that life originated in the ocean. Ever since, an amazing diversity and richness of animal species has evolved in our ocean – from tiny plankton, over corals to the enormous blue whale.

Of a predicted number of 2,150,000 marine animal species only about 8% are described and catalogued. Some 92% of animals living in the ocean are still undiscovered.

Endangered wildlife

Many species – especially marine mammals – are in distress or critically endangered by human activities such as hunting, fishing and pollution.

Of 129 marine mammal species more than a quarter have a status of concern: 10.9% are listed as vulnerable, 12.5% as endangered, 3.1% as critically endangered

THREATS FOR THE SEA AND MARINE ANIMALS

Underwater noise pollution

Humans generate deafening noise under water. This has fatal consequences for marine life which relies on acoustic senses for orientation, communication or searching for prey.

Our goal

Ocean Custody has been a loud voice for quieter seas since 2002. We ensure that noise pollution is addressed by governments and international bodies and we engage to reduce noise emissions.

Plastic pollution

Plastic pollutes the ocean long before we use it. And for a long time afterwards. It is harmful throughout its entire life cycle – from its production and use, to its disposal.

Our goal

Ocean Custody tackles the plastic problem at its roots. We advocate for a global legally binding plastic treaty that regulates plastics at each stage of its life cycle.

Deep-sea mining

The deep-sea is the largest biosphere on the planet – and home to an immeasurable number of fascinating species. This mysterious habitat is under threat: pollution, overfishing and climate change are already causing massive damage to the deep-sea. Now another danger is looming in the form of deep-sea mining. Mining for precious minerals in the deep sea can have devastating consequences.

Climate change

The ocean is the blue lung of our planet. It stores around a third of the CO2 from the atmosphere generated by humans and produces half of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean also absorbs much of the excess heat that accumulates in the Earth’s system. Ocean conservation also means climate protection.
